Vocational Baccalaureate (MP)

The vocational baccalaureate provides a broad education in general knowledge that completes initial vocational training. A Certificat Fédéral de Capacité (CFC certificate of proficiency) related to a three- or four-year initial vocational course is an integral part of the vocational baccalaureate.

The technical vocational baccalaureate (MPT) provides access to specialised schools, in particular engineering schools, recognised by the Confederation, without the need to take an exam in compliance with provisions of Article 5 of the Federal Law on Specialised Schools (HES) dated 6th October 1995, or to universities via a “passerelle” examination.

The EMF offers two options to obtain the technical vocational baccalaureate (MPT):

Integrated MPT1 (concomitant with the CFC)

Students take their baccalaureate classes concurrently with their vocational classes with a view toward getting a CFC. For four years (or three years for the short course), they prepare for their professional exams and technical vocational baccalaureate exams at the same time. Admission into the ergonEMF or logusEMF sections also provides access to the MPT1 course.

Therefore, there is no need to apply separately for MPT1.

Post-CFC MPT2

Lessons that prepare students for the technical vocational baccalaureate (MPT2) are part of a high-level course in general knowledge aimed at students who already have a CFC. The technical vocational baccalaureate allows them to continue their studies in a specialised school without the need to take an entrance exam. The course lasts one year, with lessons given on a full-time basis, culminating with a series of exams covering general fields. Each student can choose to study in a French-speaking or German-speaking class, depending on their mother tongue.

The deadline to register for MPT2 is the end of May 2012.

Core Courses

The vocational baccalaureate, which represents 1,440 lessons, including both apprenticeship and school hours, comprises four core courses:

  • First national language
  • Second national language
  • Third language
  • Mathematics

Specific Branches

  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Mathematics

Additional Branches

  • History and Politics
  • Economics and Law

Interdisciplinary Work Focused on a Project (TIP)

Interdisciplinary work (TIP) is an integral part of the process for achieving the MPT. Each student chooses two branches (for example, Chemistry and Economics) and prepares a written piece of work on a given subject.

Higher Education

Access to a specialised school (HES) is governed by federal law that requires the student to receive an MP (vocational baccalaureate) in addition to the CFC (Certificat Fédéral de Capacité). Both certificates must be in the same field in order to gain access to a relevant branch in a specialised school. We recommend that students determine the requirements of the branch they are interested in when considering a specialised school.

FAQ

What is the CFC?
The Certificat Fédéral de Capacité (federal certificate of proficiency) certifies that the bearer is a qualified professional in the trade or profession associated with it.

Do you provide a course that leads to a bachelor’s degree?
No, this level of education is tertiary and is provided by specialised schools or universities. The EMF only provides upper secondary-level courses.

I have already studied at the upper secondary level...
Please contact us to discuss the possibility of being exempt from lessons, depending on what courses you have already completed.
